Personally, planting new each summer (and other seasons) is one of my favorite parts of buying plants. But, if you’re done with the hassle or just want a sure show-stopper in your yard each year, then get a perennial.
We’ve gathered a few of our favorites to brighten up your home or business tailored to the Bluegrass this season.
Cat’s Pajamas
This particular cat mint is a great, sun-loving flower that mimics lavender, though it’s much easier to take care of. It’s amazing for pollinators, attracting bees, butterflies and other critters. The name is also rightfully so; if you go in for a sniff, there’s a light aroma of mint. Cat’s Pajamas might just be the purple touch your landscape needs and the pollinator’s breath of fresh minty air.
Allium
Ornamental onion, also known as Allium, is a colorful, globe-shaped perennial. When in bloom, they normally come in bright purple, pink, white, blue and yellow colors and, out of bloom, the plant looks, and smells, similar to that of a sprouting onion, hence where they get their glorious name. Allium is also known for pest control, warding off deer and rabbit, while also being pollinator friendly. If you’re getting a late start on your backyard pollinator garden, don’t forget these guys.
Astilbe
One of the only beautifully flowering shade perennials I can think of is Astilbe. A shade-loving perennial with colorful blooms can sometimes be hard to come by in Kentucky, but this bundle of joy comes in an array of colors and won’t leave you disappointed. In summer or fall, add this perennial to the shady spot in your yard for a pop of color.
Hosta
This slow but mighty growing shade perennial doesn’t need any flowers thanks to its unique leaves. The crazy pinks and purples you see online may be a scam, but the beautiful green with white edges and hints of blue are the real deal. The colorful foliage would liven up any corner of your patio, or make for a great border around the garden. Either way, they can’t be beat.
Bee Balm
Lastly, if you want to draw in the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, plant some bee balm. This nectar-rich plant will be sure to bring pollinators and color to your backyard. They thrive in full sun, blooming all summer in shades of red, pink, purple and white. Growing up to four-feet-high, these perennials will be yours and the pollinators best friend this season.
